Monday 28th August – Bike **** Around Felixstowe – sunny and hot :)

With the forecast wind long gone and a hot light wind day forecast Felixstowe was going to be heaving! So, after a relaxing morning at home Mag suggested we pack a sandwich and head for the peace and quiet of Kings Fleet:) We left home at midday and headed down to The Spa where the Sky Whale is. It is completely made of plastic bottles, it looks amazing but tells a sad story as it shows the number of bottles put into the sea every second!!!!! :( I had a go at naming the whale and got a free water bottle while Mag had a chat with our neighbours. We continued slowly along the very busy prom but then stayed on the roads all the way to Felixstowe Ferry. There were cars parked everywhere and the carparks full but then when do you ever get a sunny and hot Bank Holiday? At the Ferry we took the River Deben path and soon left the crowds behind us:) On reaching Kings Fleet we came across our friend Gloria and her husband also out on their bikes and they had just seen a Bittern! We didn’t see it but saw a Marsh Harrier overhead instead:) After putting the world to right we continued down to the fleet and found a nice quiet fishing platform for our picnic:) A nice cooling breeze had picked up as a Kingfisher whizzed past followed by loads of swans. We heard voices and were surprised to see Grandparents taking their small grandson for a trip in a rowing boat going past. After an hour relaxing and reading we carried on up the lane with the local farmers in full swing with combines and tractors everywhere! We took our route along country lanes and footpaths back to The Grove, then through the town and home. We were out three hours covering ten miles and easily got away from the maddening crowds:) I did quickly check the seafront to see if it was breezy enough to sail but sadly not and not much wind in the foreseeable future:(
